Australian Shepherd Exercise Needs: The Dog That Never Stops

Australian Shepherd Exercise Needs: The Dog That Never Stops

Australian Shepherds are herding dogs without a flock. All that herding energy — the drive to run, chase, control, and work — has nowhere to go. Unless you give it somewhere to go.

How Much Exercise Does an Aussie Need?

60-90 minutes of vigorous daily exercise, plus mental stimulation.

The "plus mental stimulation" part is critical. An Aussie that gets 90 minutes of running but zero mental challenges will still be restless. Their brain needs work too.

By Age:

  • Puppies (under 1 year): 5 min per month of age, 2x daily. Heavy socialization and mental work.
  • Adolescents (1-2 years): 45-60 min vigorous, 2x daily. Peak chaos period.
  • Adults (2-8 years): 60-90 min daily. Mix of physical and mental.
  • Seniors (9+): 30-45 min moderate. Mental work stays important.
  • What Happens When Aussies Don't Get Enough

Australian Shepherds without adequate exercise and mental stimulation develop specific problems:

  • Herding behavior on people/children — nipping at heels, circling, trying to "herd" the family
  • Obsessive behaviors — shadow chasing, light fixation, tail spinning
  • Destructive chewing — not just shoes, but walls, furniture, and doors
  • Excessive barking — Aussies are vocal when frustrated
  • Neurotic energy — inability to settle, constant movement, can't relax
  • These aren't character flaws. They're symptoms of a working dog without work.

    Best Exercises for Australian Shepherds

    1. Slatmill Training

Sustained trotting at a working pace matches the Aussie's herding gait. They find a rhythm and run with focus and purpose. 15-25 minutes. The slatmill engages their brain (they're making decisions about pace) while exhausting their body.

    2. Agility

Aussies are the #1 agility breed. Jumping, weaving, tunnels, contacts — it combines physical work with the handler communication and problem-solving that Aussies crave.

    3. Herding (If You Have Access)

The real thing. Herding lessons let Aussies do what they were bred for. Even if you never compete, a monthly herding session satisfies something deep in their genetics.

    4. Frisbee / Disc

Aussies are natural disc dogs. Running, jumping, catching — it combines prey drive, athleticism, and handler focus.

    5. Advanced Obedience / Trick Training

Aussies are in the top 10 most intelligent breeds. They learn fast and need constant new challenges. Teach complex trick chains, scent discrimination, or competition obedience.

    6. Nose Work

Engages the brain intensely. A 20-minute scent work session can tire an Aussie more than a 40-minute run. Excellent for rainy days or when paired with physical exercise.

    The Mental Stimulation Non-Negotiable

Physical exercise alone won't satisfy an Aussie. You MUST include:

  • Daily training sessions (10-15 min) teaching new skills
  • Puzzle feeders for at least one meal per day
  • Variety — rotate activities weekly so nothing becomes routine
  • Challenge progression — once they master something, make it harder
  • An Aussie that's physically tired but mentally bored is still a problem dog. An Aussie that's both physically and mentally tired is an angel.

    Aussie-Specific Slatmill Tips

  • They learn fast — most Aussies are running comfortably on a slatmill within 1-2 sessions
  • They can overdo it — Aussies will run until they drop because they want to please you. Set a timer and enforce stops.
  • Use it as a job — frame the slatmill session as "work time" with a clear start and end ritual. Aussies thrive on structure.
  • Pair with obedience — do a 5-minute training session immediately after the slatmill while they're focused and calm.
  • The Bottom Line

Australian Shepherds are working dogs that need a job. Without one, they create their own job — and you won't like it. A slatmill provides the physical foundation, but you must layer mental challenges on top. The combo of slatmill + training + puzzle feeders is the closest thing to a herding lifestyle you can give an Aussie in a suburban home.
